Often we underestimate the amount of space provided by the humble garage – but when you think about it, it’s quite a large proportion of your overall living space!

If you aren’t using your garage to house a car you might want to start thinking of other ways to utilise the space. Your garage could become your “room of one’s own” – a space to embrace your hobbies and interests, whether it’s doing up vintage or V8 cars, DIY woodworking, jamming guitar or drums, or getting creative with pottery or painting.

Here are some ideas to get you started on planning your ultimate man (or woman!) cave.

Organising Your Garage Space

First things first… time to get organised!

The garage can often become a neglected part of the house. We use it to store tools, unused items, storage containers full of souvenirs and unwanted gifts… in fact, it can quite easily turn into more of a junkyard than anything!

However, with a little bit of organisation your garage can become a clean, efficiently organised space where everything is relatively easy to find. Garage organisation is not difficult, and doesn’t have to be expensive.

Ground Works

First, you need to get everything off the ground. A few strategically placed metal shelves (that you can make yourself) and some large plastic storage bins will really help you to get that garage organised.

Plastic bins are really cheap, waterproof and water-tight. In addition, they are see-through, and can also easily be labelled, meaning you’ll be able to find what you need so much faster.

You can also stack them neatly along your shelves.

Just adding a few shelves will help immensely with storage issues and when you utilise wall space, you have much more floor room for larger items, as well as neat clear space around your cars.

Hanging About

The key to keeping your garage organised is having a place for everything. Hanging things takes up little to no floor space and utilises wall space that is typically left forgotten.

You can add as many hooks as you like to your garage walls, to customise your wall space and neatly hang tools, toys, surfboards, tennis racquets… even large items like bikes.

Handy Tool Towers

Tall long-handled tools such as brooms, mops and rakes can also be stored vertically and efficiently in tower racks. A tower rack in the corner gives you the perfect storage solution.

Getting Creative with Your Garage

Now that you’ve cleaned and organised your new space, you can keep it as your ultimate workshop, or start getting creative about how you want to utilise it.

The large open space of your garage makes it an incredibly flexible space. Try these ideas for size!

An Extra Playroom for the Kids

An unused garage makes the perfect play space. Kids will love having their own established space as they grow into their teenage years as well.

Your Own Home Office

Use glass sliding doors and light timber frames to fill your “home office” with natural light and plenty of fresh air, to give a clean, contemporary look.

Studio Dreaming

The garage is the perfect studio space, providing the space needed for painting, drawing or even dance and yoga. It also won’t matter too much about getting paint or clay on the floor.

A Home Movie Theatre

Impress your family and friends by hosting movie nights in your own home cinema. Teenage kids will love this idea – don’t forget the popcorn machine!

Whatever you decide to do, discuss your ideas with a professional before you start renovating. Garage doors will play a large role in creating your space, maximising the amount of space you have to work with, filtering light and air, and adding the right aesthetics to your transformation.
